How do rechargeable lead-acid batteries work?
Rechargeable lead-acid batteries are a battery technology based on the chemical reaction between lead and acid, which allows the storage and release of electrical energy through a clever charging and discharging process. Its working principle is deeply rooted in the principle of chemical equilibrium, through the mutual conversion between lead and lead peroxide, completing the transfer and storage of energy during charge and discharge cycles.
During the charging process, rechargeable lead-acid batteries absorb electrical energy from an external power source, directing current to the positive and negative terminals of the battery. At this time, the lead peroxide on the positive electrode undergoes a chemical reaction and is reduced to oxygen. At the same time, the pure lead on the negative electrode is oxidized into lead oxide. This series of reactions establishes the chemical balance inside the battery and stores electrical energy in chemical form within the battery. At the heart of this process is a redox reaction between lead and acid, which stores electrical energy through the flow of electrons between the positive and negative electrodes.
When it is necessary to release the stored electrical energy, the battery begins to discharge by connecting to an external circuit to form a closed circuit. At this time, the chemical reaction in the battery is reversed, the lead oxide on the positive electrode is reduced to pure lead, and the pure lead on the negative electrode is oxidized into lead oxide. This discharge process causes the stored electrical energy to flow through the circuit, enabling the output of electrical energy. It is worth noting that this process is reversible, so rechargeable lead-acid batteries can undergo multiple charge and discharge cycles.
Rechargeable lead-acid batteries are widely used in many fields due to their reliability and relatively simple working principle. Unlike disposable batteries, rechargeable lead-acid batteries have the ability to reverse the reaction by reapplying current through an external power source, thereby storing electricity again. This characteristic makes it an ideal choice for many applications, especially those that require frequent charging and discharging, such as solar energy storage systems, car starting batteries and uninterruptible power supply systems.
Their simple working principle and relatively low manufacturing cost are one of the reasons why rechargeable lead-acid batteries are so popular in the market. After years of development and improvement, this battery technology has become one of the mature technologies in the battery field. Its successful application in multiple application fields such as the automotive industry, renewable energy fields and emergency power supplies has proven its feasibility and stability in practice.
